Professor Emeritus Stuart Rees, is Director of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies and Director of the Sydney Peace Foundation at the University of Sydney. He is Professor of Social Work and Social Policy. Professor Rees has been a social worker in Britain, in Canada, in the War on Poverty programs in the USA and with Save the Children in India and Sri Lanka. He has taught at leading universities in the UK (Aberdeen & Southampton), in Canada (Toronto and Wilfrid Laurier) and in the USA (University of California at Berkeley, University of Texas). He is a well-known media commentator and has a regular spot with James Valentine on ABC Radio 702 in Sydney, 'Peace with Rees'. I am honoured to be asked to pay tribute to this scholar, human rights activist, poet and musician. I am indebted to a Palestinian American whose vision for a common humanity knew no boundaries, whose creativity ; in writing, in social action and in music ; was sustained by his courage, who knew that those who are committed to universal human rights could never ignore the cause of peace with justice for Palestinians. Those three qualities ; his emphasis on the responsibilities of an intellectual in public life, his courage and his struggle for justice for Palestinians - are the focus of my tribute. Stuart Rees |
